Kazakhstan does not welcome unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo
Kazakhstan does not welcome unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo, said Erzhan Ashikbayev, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman at a weekly press briefing.
“The stance taken by Kazakhstan on the Kosovo issue rests on fundamental UN principles of preservation of the sovereignty and the integrity of the territory within internationally recognized boundaries; we believe in peaceful ways of settling disputes through implementing provisions of documents aimed at resolving the crisis, notably UN Security Council's resolution 1244 on Kosovo”, E. Ashikbayev.
He noted that the Kazakh government “does not welcome violation of territorial integrity and unilateral declaration of independence which can be deemed as precedent by all the unacknowledged territorial entities”.
At the same time he emphasized that the Helsinki Final Act does permit state boundary changes in line with international law, in a peaceful way and by agreement. “In this context, Kazakhstan welcomes initiatives and coordinated efforts of the international community, including those under the aegis of the UN, OSCE and EU, aimed at reaching mutually acceptable conditions to resolve the Kosovo issue”, E. Ashikbayev said.
“Kazakhstan has been watching the situation and has been in favor of reaching a mutually acceptable solution based on international law”, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
On Sunday, Kosovo Parliament adopted a resolution to declare independence of the territorial entity. Serbia has no plans of acknowledging the declared independence and regards the move as a violent unilateral dismemberment of its territory.
