Kazakhstan’s aspiration to chair the OSCE in 2009. He stressed that Kazakhstan is the first young sovereign nation to be
aspiring to chair the organization and that positive decision on the Kazakhstan candidacy would be a strong evidence of
respect for the principle of justice and equality of all the member states and would add to the Organization’s weight across
its entire area of responsibility. Head of the Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry expressed his confidence in that allowing a
Central Asia state to chair the OSCE would be a powerful incentive for the ruling elites and an emblem of progressive
motion of the region states towards greater liberalization and openness of the political and economic systems.
At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that «OSCE remains an effective mechanism of implementation - at regional
level - of general international law instruments in such realms as maintenance of military-political safety, conflicts settlement
and post-conflict rehabilitation, economic and environment protection cooperation, protection of human rights, and
democratization”. “Our joint task is to contribute to the Organization’s strength and effectiveness in the face of growing
threats and challenges within its field of responsibility”, M. Tazhin believes.
The Minister noted that in the capacity of the OSCE chair, Kazakhstan would focus on stability and security maintenance,
promotion of tolerance and nondescrimination, and on counter-terrorism efforts.
In the course of his visit to Austria, Head of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry met OSCE Secretary General Mark Perren de
Brishambo and the Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Ursula Plassnik. In the course of his
meeting with the OSCE Secretary General, M. Tazhin discussed acute issues of interaction between Kazakhstan and the
OSCE, as well as those of Kazakhstan’s bid to chair the Organization in 2009. At the meeting with his Austrian counterpart,
M. Tazhin discussed ways to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and promising vectors of bilateral relations between
the two nations.
