Almaty-Astana highway to be rated 1st category starting from 2009
This was announced at a government sitting by Abilgazy Kusainov, Kazakh Vice Minister of Transport and Communications.
Almaty-Astana automobile road originally constructed as 3rd category highway is not capable of handling the current intensity of the traffic. Therefore, starting from 2009 the road is going to be transferred to the 1st category to be capable of handling 6 lines. This was announced at a government sitting by Abilgazy Kusainov, Kazakh Vice Minister of Transport and Communications.
The excessively busy traffic inside Almaty calls for urgent construction of a ring road, the Vice Minister believes. The construction will be effected on concessioning basis in 2008-2010. The 6-line 1st category highway will run across Karasaiskyi, Ilyiskyi and Talgarsky districts of Almaty oblast. The project provides for construction of 14 bridges, 8 overpasses, and 2 overpassing bridges over railway lines. “By the current moment, the feasibility study has been completed. The issue of compensating - out of the central budget - the residents for demolition of their homes within the project territories is being considered. A number of companies, including foreign ones, have expressed their interest in the project. Tender procedures will commence upon independent examination”, A. Kusainov advised.
Upon adoption of the laws on relocation of gambling facilities and on development of satellite towns, Almaty-Kapshagai highway is going to be reconstructed to provide a new cement concrete surface. This is going to be a 4-line 1st category highway. The project is to be implemented in 2008-2010.
