Feasibility study for construction of the Korgas-Zhetigen railway link will be completed by June 1, 2007. This was announced at a Government sitting by Serik Akhmetov, Kazakh Minister of Transport and Communications.

The length of the Korgas-Zhetigen railway link will make up 296 km. The cost of the project totals KZT 41 billion. The project will be launched February 20, 2008. March 1, 2011 is the anticipated completion date.

The Korgas-Zhetigen railway link will enable to establish a second frontier checkpoint at the border passing and increase the freights by another 25 million tons per annum. The line will cut down the current railroad Almaty-Aktau-China by 500 km. The tender to define the concession contract holder has been scheduled for August. Through offering a short-cut, the link will enable to facilitate freights running from China to Central Asia, Iran, West Europe and Caucasus.
