Kazakh Parliament passes amendments into national constitution in second reading

Ermek Zhumabayev, spokesman for the Joint Committee for the Draft Law on Amendments, announced that the amendments will expand the Parliament’s powers, increase the number of Parliament seats, strengthen the role of political parties, and expand the role of the Supreme Judicial Council. He also informed that when preparing the draft law for the second reading the deputies had submitted a number of important proposals.
At the initiative of MP Uzakbai Karamanov, the deputies passed the draft law on amendments into the Constitution.
According to the MP, in a speech delivered at a joint sitting of the Parliament May 16, 2007 Kazakhstan President had soundly substantiated the need for introducing amendments into the Constitution. For these two days many citizens, including experts, MPs, heads of central and local executive power bodies had voiced their support to the President’s initiative. “I think the opinion commonly shared by the MPs is that the country’s population extends strong support to the draft law. Therefore, I am proposing to pass in the second reading the draft law on amendments into the Constitution”, MP Karamanov said.
