Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov and President Lee Myung-Bak of South Korea attending a business forum attending in Astana
“The state visit of President Lee Myung-Bak testifies to successful development of relations between the two nations. In many realms Kazakhstan and South Korea have been effective partners”, K. Massimov said.
May 13, the Radisson SAS Hotel of Astana hosted a business forum focused on prospects of Kazakh-South Korean relations. Among those in attendance were Prime Minister Karim Massimov of Kazakhstan and President Lee Myung-Bak of South Korea.
“The state visit of President Lee Myung-Bak testifies to successful development of relations between the two nations. In many realms Kazakhstan and South Korea have been effective partners”, K. Massimov said.
In spite of the continuing global crisis, the two nations have been working to expand cooperation, K. Massimov pointed out. An example of cooperation can be joint projects in electric power industry, natural resources development, construction and financial sector.
“Economy diversification is a strategic goal for Kazakhstan. Therefore, I am inviting partners from South Korea to participate in break-through projects outside extraction sectors. Renewable sources of energy, IT sector, chemical industry, and freight handling are among the most promising vectors for now”, the Prime Minister said.
“I suggest that Kazakhstan and South Korea establish three belts of cooperation, notably in electric power industry, IT sector and transport, and expand interaction in the realm of environment protection. Cooperation in electric power industry should involve projects to put in place respective infrastructure, including electrical grids construction. Construction of the Balkhash hydro-electric power station along with power transmission lines can be an example”.
“South Korea possesses advanced technology in construction, management of atomic power plants and power transmission lines; if we combine technology with energy resources development in Kazakhstan, this will ensure a substantial effect. The project to establish an IT belt rests on Korean technology that has won worldwide recognition. When implemented in Kazakhstan, this technology will enable the people to overcome geographical remoteness and to closely interact with the rest of the world. Today, in the course of the talks with President Nazarbayev, I offered cooperation in promoting wireless broadband Internet, and President Nazarbayev accepted the offer. Therefore, I am expressing hope such a project could be the starting point for IT cooperation which may further expand to financial sector and other realms”, President Lee Myung-Bak said.
The event was also attended by managers of Daewoo, Hyundai, Eximbank and some other South Korean companies.
On the Kazakhstan’s side the forum was arranged by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
