Kazakhstan to assume the presidency of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2010
Kazakhstan will assume the presidency of the OSCE in 2010. This was announced at the Madrid Ministerial Council sitting where the country’s bid was considered.
The decision had been preceded by a speech delivered by Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister Marat Tazhin at the 15th sitting of the Ministerial Council, two-day deliberations on the issue, multiple meetings of the Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister with heads of EU delegations.
Minister Tazhin read statement made by the Kazakh delegation on the country’s bid to chair the organization. “For almost 5 years Kazakhstan has been striving to be appointed the OSCE Chair”, reads the statement. “We believe that granting the presidency to Kazakhstan and all the adjacent processes would have a multiplicative effect on modernization of our country and the region as a whole, as well as would bring a new impetus to the organization for the good of all of its member states”.
The Council’s sitting was closed with an important decision that Kazakhstan would assume OSCE presidency in 2010. Greece will hold the post in 2009, and Lithuania – in 2011.
