Kazakhstan’s PM Karim Massimov meets Igor Chestin director of World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
Today at the Government’s House in Astana, Kazakhstan’s PM Karim Massimov met Igor Chestin director of World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The sides discussed joint environment initiatives such as restoration of the Balkhash basin ecosystem and of water balance of Ili-Balkhash basin.
WWF expressed its interest in a project to reintroduce Turan tigers to Kazakhstan. To this end, a unique preserve of the species will be established in the southern part of the Lake Balkhash area, the original habitat of the Turan tiger. The project envisages bringing in Russian Amur tigers that are virtually identical to Turan tigers. The area still retains riparian forest and traditional prey – riparian deer, Gazella subgutturosa and wild hogs.
